Rocky Mountain News: METALLICA Fans Do Themselves Justice
August 2, 2003RockyMountainNews.com is reporting that "thousands of METALLICA fans packed Invesco Field at Mile High [in Denver] on Friday night (Aug. 1),ready to thrash, mosh, point fingers, sneer, yell and be antisocial.
" 'They're the best metal band that's ever been,' said Adam Anderson, 25, of Denver. 'That's music history, not an opinion.'
"As the venue suggests, it was one of the biggest concerts of the year for Denver, and it started at 3 p.m. with four warm-up acts. METALLICA was expected to take the stage about 9 p.m. The last time they were in town on tour was 2000.
" 'I thought I missed out on seeing them tour back in high school,' said Lori Paladino, 25, of Denver, who grew up in Connecticut. 'I didn't think they were going to tour anymore. Didn't they go to rehab?'
"After an experiment in diversifying their emotional portfolio in the 1990s — a period METALLICA fans refer to as the 'new (stuff)' — the rockers came back with this year's 'St. Anger'. The album has had some negative reviews, but longtime fans say it represents their more authentic side, whether or not pop radio likes it.
" 'METALLICA's a band that sold platinum records and never got a song on the radio for a decade (in the 1980s),' said Brian Corry of Breckenridge. 'The mainstream started liking METALLICA when they started making (music) videos.' " Read more.
